MOVING TO MALTA

LIVING IN MALTA

IMPORTING BEER

Jan and Ted at the Red Snapper restaurant in
Rodney Bay, St Lucia

My father's job saw him spend three 3 year spells based on the island of Malta, with the rest being based in Scarborough, England. These 9 years in Malta resulted in me both being born in Malta (at the then Military hospital at Mtarfa) and spending half my childhood here. Over those 9 years we lived on the Strand in Sliema (now the Milano Due Hotel), in Paceville (long before it became the centre of Malta's nightlife), In Birkirkara (in Psaila Street 1955-8), In Msida ( 1964-5, overlooking the constuction of the Regional Road), and Sliema again (1965-7 in what became the Galaxy Aparthotel, since demolished). So Malta always felt as much as home as Scarborough did. And Malta had far better weather! Maybe this was the reason for seeking out hotter climates for holidays. Eventually the desire for a more consistantly warm climate than the UK can offer, saw us relocate here in September 2005.

Prior to moving to Malta, holidays had always been an important part of our lives- regular visits to Sliema, a number of visits to Barbados and St Lucia to watch Englands cricket team, visiting a good number of Greek Islands and the southern Peloponese, and regular trips to Belgium (Beer Paradise) provide fond memories. I was also fortunate that my work allowed me to become very familiar with much of Ireland, And when "abroad" restaurants and bars are a key memory, so here are some favourites

Reduit Beach, St Lucia with Pigeon Island in the background

The Trappistenhuis in Gent offers a
 huge range of beers

pubs in the UK - primarily in South Lincolnshire/North Cambridgeshire, North Staffordshire, West Midlands and Yorkshire

Hotels, Pubs and Off Licences in Ireland offering a change from the black stuff.

Cafes in Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Spain and Greece offering a change from the international lager brands.

Restaurants and Bars in Barbados and St Lucia freqented while there for the cricket

SPORT

Whilst in England I became keen watcher of the football team local to me regardless of the level they played at - So starting in Scarborough who still say are my team.

From the mid seventies to the late eighties when they were one of the best non league teams in England; they won the F A Trophy at Wembley 3 times. Promotion to the football league followed, but after early promise the club struggled financialy and they were eventually relegated back to the Conference. The 2003/4 season produced Boro's best FA Cup run when victories over Doncaster, Port Vale and Southend rewarded Boro with a 4th round home tie against Chelsea. This brought back memories of Boros previous encounter with Chelsea in 1989 in the league Cup - Boro (then in old Division 4) won with 2 goals in the last 3 minutes. On this occassion Boro can be proud of a creditable 0-1 defeat. 2005/7 was a terrible 2 seasons with Boro relegated twice due to financial problems! Then on 22 June 2007 they were wound up. A new club, Scarborough Athletic was formed and they joined the North East Counties League Division 1 for season 2007/8, playing at Bridlington! In season 2008/9 Scarborough Athletic easily won their the league, won promotion to the Premier division and had a good run in the FA Vase

Then whilst at Unlversity I followed Leeds during the Don Revie years. Work took me to Stoke on Trent where I often watched Port Vale. Then we relocated to Peterborough

So Deeping Rangers were my local team from 1998 to 2005, In 2006/7 we won through 2 rounds of the FA Cup for the first time, went 28 league games without defeat from the start of the seasons and on 17 April 2007 became UCL Premier League Champions. .

Cricket is the only sport I have played competively. I played for my Work team in a Yorkshire evening cricket league. Since 1961 I have watched Yorkshire mostly at Scarborough and Headingley. Yorkshire cricket had its best season for 33 years in 2001 winning the county championship. They also won the C&G trophy in 2002 but since have provided little excitement. We have also watched England mostly again at Headingley but also in the Carlbbean.

COLLECTABLES

I used to collect breweriana including full beer bottles but lack of space has put a stop to adding to the collection. I am still a member of a society called the Association of British Brewery Collectables.

WORK

After graduating from Leeds University, I was taken on as a graduate trainee in marketing by Yorkshire Electricity. 4 years later I was recruited by electrical goods manufacturer Creda. I then had 24 years continous marketing employment first with the group they were then part of, then businesses that acquired them. Over the years I held a number of marketing roles for several brands before accepting redundancy after yet another takeover. I started tedwhitfield.marketing in 2001, and later wvbs ltd and up to moving to Malta in 2005 undertook a number of large and small projects both in Electical Goods markets and for small local businesses. These 2 businesses (see logos and links left and right below) are dormant at present but I would love a new marketing project. However I now run a business here importing and selling Belgain beer - to see this click on the Belgain flag below.
